Current Question Patterns
Why is there such a lack of patterns? I'm very new to beading but have completed a 2 day course, learnt about brick stick, ladder stitch, fringing, spiral twist and ogolala butterfly. I've completed two kits but where do I go from here? I bought a book because I'd like to make the items only to find they are just pictures without any pattern guidelines. I've searched most of the on-line companies and can find very little so please, what do you all do??

Both Bead & Button and Beadwork magazines websites have free patterns as well as patterns to buy. On one of them you can search by technique, can't remember which.
Some books are better than others, I would recomend Carol Huber Cyphers mastering beadwork which has diagrams and written instructions and takes you from basic projects to more complex ones. I love her primary colours, but they're not for everyone - you just have to look past it. Also the various magazines always have lots of patterns and ideas, often with good diagrams as well as written instructions to follow, have you seen Bead? I think it's important to have words as well as diagrams, but they complement each other. Stephanie Burnham's 101 designs (not quite the right title, but you should be able to find her) is also really good. I'm also others can suggest some good books / sites

Thank you so much, Gail, for taking the time to reply. I will certainly check out the Bead & Button web site. Quite by change I learned that someone I know in the village is a beader and she has put me in touch with the local beader group who meet only about 5 miles away. I understand they have a box of books and magazines which one can borrow so I'm sure I shall find plenty of help and encouragement there. I was quite surprised that out of the 30-40 people who read my message no one else felt able to respond. Thank you again.

Hi Rustie, Until last year I had never been to a class, I had spent 5 years teaching myself using books, magazines and kits. So I have explored a lot of different things to find what suited me. When you're starting out there are so many things to know about it can be a bit daunting and confusing. I'm not sure how many people use this forum (despite the number of views) you might be better off using one of the magazine forums to get to 'know' other beaders. My experience of forums tells me that very few people post, compared to the number of people who look. You only have to look at the number of people who have registerred with asite and compare with the names you see posting to realise it comes down to the gobby few! I think sometimes perhaps people don't think they have enough experience / knowledge to respond and are also hoping to see what nuggets your post turns up!
Good luck with your beading, Gail

Thanks Gail. I find this surprising as I frequent forums from the Sugarcraft Guild and also the BBC Food chat line (amongst others) and both of these produce at least a couple of pages every day. Both are very friendly sites and several of us have actually met up at the NEC exhibitions. It's nice to be able to put a face to a name.

There is a site called Beading Daily and it is free to register, they send e-mails to you everyday and are always adding new projects to there site. I buy beadnbutton/Bead and sometimes Beadwork magazines these have loads of useful information for you to put into practise. Have you found the Beadworkers Guild yet? they have a very good series of books, really informative. Jill stocks them. If you become a member of the guild you will then get a quarterly mag that gives you loads more information, whats new, Patterns etc. Have you got a bead group near you? that helped me, unfortunately I out grew the group and found that I was helping more people than I was beading and still paying for the privilege, so I have set my own up. join Bead merchants on line club, well worth the money and they have some beautiful designs. I hope this helps you with this lovely hobby.

Many thanks Debs, will certainly follow up Beading Daily. I understand the Guild sub runs from March so thought I'd better wait until then. I really appreciate the help people have offered. Yes, there is a group very close to where I live and I'm going there on Monday. Where abouts are you?? I live near Reading

I used to live near Reading but now live in Norfolk so a little far to come, is it the Berkshire Beaders you are going to that meet up every 3rd Monday, if you have a daylight lamp, take it as the light isn't very good but the people there are lovely. Yes you are right about the beadworkers guild run April onwards but I joined last feb, and paid extra so I paid for the year to come and the last 6 months of the previous year so you don't have to wait until March to join.

Yes, Debs, it is the Berkshire Beaders. I thought their web site was excellent. Thanks for the tip about a light - better take an extension lead as I don't suppose there are sufficient points. We are doing pearl ear-rings this month. I have to say I've been a bit disappointed with the ear ring findings - they all look a bit 'cheap'. Do you know of anyone how supplies better quality ones?

I would have to say that you can't go wrong with Bead Merchant Selection. They only stock good quality products. If you are going to put so much effort into making anything why cheapen it with poor quality finish findings and if you order from them 99.9% of your items you order you will receive the following day, I have ordered from other places and I have been waiting days sometimes more than a week. I hope this helps? Are you going to join the Guild before March then? Enjoy Monday, How long have you been going to Berkshire Beaders for?

Unfortunately Bead Merchant only seem to do the fish hook type. I don't like to see wire going through the ear lobe.

Hi,
re patterns; the web-site
http://www.bead-patterns.com/
has lots - many are free and you can also search by category/designer etc.

If you like geometric stuff check out
http://www.jeanpower.com/patterns/
She's the editor of "Bead" the UK magazine. Her instructions are really good (and if you get to go to one of her classes she's a really good teacher).

Another site with free tutorials & patterns is:
http://beadwork.about.com/

I also subscribe to "Beadwork" and "Bead & Button" magazines.

It's been a while since your original post, but hopefully this will help someone!

Many thanks for your in put. I've since joined my local beading group and, apart from monthly projects, we can borrow books and magazines from the group library so I'm a bit better placed than I was. Will check out your suggestions though, all grist to the mill.

hi there
i was just looking what i needed for a pattern when i came across this website, and saw your post, i know it was a while ago, but i just wanted to say i buy bead and button magazine, and bead magazine, and they both have the step by step instructions for their patterns which is great, also on bead magazines website they have a section where you can down load patterns from previous issues, and these are great, and always come with step by tep instructions, also i wanted to recommend a forum to you, called bead buddies here is the link: http://www.beadbuddies.co.uk/forum/
this is a really lovely and friendly forum, with beaders of all levels of skill, and there are step by step patterns on there, and if you have any questions there is always some one on there who knows the answer
good luck

Thanks for your interest, Lyn, About a month after I posted my original query I was fortunate enough to meet up with an aquaintance in the same village was very into beading. She introduced me to the Berkshire Beaders who meet every month with a project each time. The club also have a small library of beading books and lots of back numbers of beading magazines which we can borrow so my problem disappeared almost overnight. Through this group I've also gained access to regular workshops in the area where the instructor brings a whole shop with her. We recently had an AGM where the possibility of changing our venue was discussed. The only thing wrong with the current one is the lighting is not very good for beading. One of our members had recently found a battery operated light with a a flexibe stand which seems ideal so we are all going to be provided with one!! If anyone is interested they come from B& Q and cost £2.99 I understand they do a bigger one for about £12 but these will be ideal for taking with us each month..

Has anybody a pattern for a charm handbag? I've been given one from Holland but can't get a pattern and I'm not clever enough to see how it is done. Only about 1 inch wide by 1/2 inch long plus handle. It's so sweet and would look good on a card too. Thanks - Owlywendy
